It was a fashion originating from England, carrying the platform meaning the world into the Austrian bourgeois living rooms since the Biedermeier. Theatre enthusiastic families crafted miniature stage settings and figures from cut-out sheets which were available at stationery stores. They reflected perfectly the illusion of depth and space of the real stages and allowed fascinated aficionados to play the contemporary repertory of the huge theatres and opera houses.
