In the Johann Strauss bicentennial year, the Theatermuseum, Vienna, is proud to present the official exhibition commemorating the King of the Waltz. The exhibition offers you the perfect opportunity to experience the glamour of the Strauss era in the city that made his music a global sensation.


Against the historic background of the magnificent Palais Lobkowitz, the Theatermuseum displays an impressive selection of objects that celebrate the life and work of Johann Strauss the Younger.

Whether it is your love of Strauss that has brought you to Vienna or you want to discover the city anew through his music – this exhibition is a must!

Johann Strauss – The first international superstar
For music lovers and anyone with an interest in culture

In a joint exhibition under the title Johann Strauss, the Theatermuseum and the Vienna City Library in City Hall guide you through the composer’s turbulent life, illuminating his gruelling lifestyle, his relationships with his parents, brothers, three wives and love affairs in Russia.

The focus of the exhibition is on his artistic output; the dance music and marches that have always been popular all over the world, and his music theatre work. Original objects connected to performances and exhibits from his written legacy place his life and work in the theatrical-historical and political context of the time. The quintessence: The phenomenon that is Johann Strauss who fascinates us to the present day!

Enter the glittering world of Johann Strauss – The Exhibition. Fall under the spell of world-famous Viennese stage works such as the operetta Die Fledermaus, while the hushed tones of visitors float through the room and the air buzzes with anticipation.

Glide across the parquet yourself and learn to dance the famous waltz to the elegant sound of Strauss’ music in the ballroom. You can also accompany Strauss on his world tour on which he travelled to Boston, where the music of the Strauss dynasty took the New World by storm.

Finish your journey with a highlight: the world-famous New Year’s Concert in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, where each year the immortal melodies of the Strauss dynasty bring festive joy to the world.
